A high pitched beep and the blue light of the alarm clock were enough to wake Jack up from his restless sleep. He turned onto his side, staring at a clock for a moment, too tired at first to read the time. Finally he made out the numbers, 4:30. He groaned and turned to his other side to stare at Sam, unknowing if she had woken up or not. He looked at her for a moment, barely awake enough to sit up. Finally he leaned over and kissed her on the forehead, deciding it would be best not to get her up so early.
He sat up, scanning the dark floor for his boxers. He eventually gave up, standing and walking to his dresser to get another pair. Most of his clothing had been packed away already so he grabbed a pair of jeans and a green t-shirt. He walked into the bathroom, as quietly as he could and shut the door, fumbling for a moment to find the light switch. The brightness almost blinded him. He set his clothes down on the floor and turned on the shower, stepping in.
He remained in the shower for longer than he usually did, just staring at the wall as the water poured over his head. Finally the warm water gave him a bit of energy and he managed to wash his hair and body before stepping out and drying himself off with a towel. He quickly got dressed, staring at himself in the mirror. For a moment he just stood there, no thought running through his mind. Finally he realized what was bothering him, his hair had reached past his shoulders again, giving him the exact same look he had when he was seventeen. Standing there reminded him of his bathroom at his Mom's house. He couldn't help but give a slight smile, although the memory brought him a bit of sorrow. So much good had happened over the past few years, so much time had flown past. Some of the lesser memories came back to him, cuddling with Sam in his room while watching The Grudge, coming home from the hospital after falling off of the roof, and the fight with Josh.
Looking back half of what he did seemed so stupid, he had flunked out of high school to join a band that he didn't intend on being in for his whole life. And even more important than that, he had dragged Sam down with him. She was pretty, funny and smart, perfect. And although she still was, she now had less potential because Jack had screwed up his own life. That was his only regret, he didn't mind missing out on college, he didn't mind getting married and having children at an early age, but he did mind that he had possibly ruined the chance of seeing the girl he loved so much go on to do something she enjoyed. She was the one that deserved to have the fun job, not him.
The sound of Amy's screeching interruppted his thoughts. Rolling his eyes, Jack walked out of the bathroom, this parenting thing seemed never to end and soon it would be even worse. He walked into Amy's room, picking her up in fear of the noise waking up Sam. "Amy Leah, I need to leave soon." He told her, frowning when she smiled up at him.
"Dada" Amy said quietly, grabbing at his hair as usual.
"Amy." Jack replied.
"Ameh" she smiled
"That's right" Jack told her, "I love you."
"luh woo" Amy said, burrying her face into his chest. Jack grinned now, she had never said that to him before. But at the same time, it gave him a pit in his stomach. She looked up at him after a moment and said "Dada" again.
"Amy."
"luh woo" she repeated.
"I love you too." He walked out of the room with her, down the stairs, and into the living room where he sat her down on the couch. As he turned on the tv and handed her a few of her stuffed animals, he glanced at the clock. He had about half an hour before he had to leave.
Walking into the kitchen, Jack opened the fridge. He wasn't exactly hungry yet but he grabbed some orange juice and poured it into a glass. He walked to the window, staring out at the navy blue sky that seemed to be lightening right at the horizon. He set the glass down, suddenly not feeling like drinking anything. He walked back over to Amy and sat down next to her. She pointed to the screen which had Curious George on it and he asked, "Who's that?" She stared up at him, "Who's that?" he repeated.
"Ection." Amy said, turning her eyes back to the tv.
"Mhm..." Jack said, rolling his eyes, "That's ection..."
Within twenty minutes, Amy was asleep in his arms. Jack smiled lightly, this would make things just a bit easier. He walked upstairs, careful not to wake her up, and set her down in her crib. He stared at her for a minute, once again realizing how much he had changed in the past two years. He was a father now, and he kept noticing himself doing less and less risky things. In a way, he didn't like it at all. He loved being the stupid guy, the guy who made everyone laugh by accidentally stapling a piece of paper to his hand. For the first time in awhile, he was kind of glad he was leaving, it gave him an opportunity to be a high school guy again, doing his crazy stunts with his friends.
He shook his head, realizing that he was obviously too tired to be thinking straight. Walking into the bedroom again he crouched down next to Sam. Placing her hand carefully on her cheek he whispered, "I've got to go now..." he kissed her lightly on the forehead, unsure if she had woken up or not, "Love you." and he walked out of the room, down the stairs, and out of the house.
By the time he had walked down to the end of the driveway, the car had pulled up. He opened the back door to the SUV and then shook his head, closing the door again and sitting on the hood. He motioned to Carden, who was at the wheel, to drive. Carden just stared at him with a look that just asked "Are you insane?"
"Just until we get to the main road..."
Carden nodded, a bit hesitant but then deciding that this could prove a bit of fun. He started the car, going slow, about ten miles an hour. Jack stood up slowly, hardly keeping his balance on the moving vehicle. Eventually Carden stopped and Jack jumped off, opening the back door again and sitting down, shoving Adam into the middle of him and Michael Guy.
"I feel gay when we carpool..." Jack muttered, leaning forward and ignoring his seatbelt.
"Well yeah..." Butcher said, "But it's better than parking a million different cars at the airport..."
"Point." Adam said, sipping the beer in his hand, "Are we getting the bus in Pomona or San Francisco?"
"Pomona..." Jack said, "Excited to sleep close to us?"
"Hells yeah!" Adam said loudly.
Jack smiled and turned his attention to the window. He watched the buildings go by, they looked so old and tired in the cloudy grey morning. He had driven on this road pretty much everyday of his life and had never realized how dull the town seemed, or even how much he liked it like that. They were on their way to Pomona, California now and for the first time he wouldn't spend his summer in Barrington. He wouldn't walk up to the local Dairy Queen everyday. He wouldn't drive around trying to pick up girls. He wouldn't hang around at Jen's parties and jump into the pool with a hot girl in his arms. Though what he really would miss was the time spent at home, watching movies with his family, camping in the backyard with Michael and Amanda, staying up late talking to Natalie about whatever they felt like. Last summer he had spent with Sam, taking care of Amy and he would even miss that.
"...Sam. Yeah Jack, can I fuck Sam?" Carden interrupted his thoughts.
"Yeah..." Jack replied absent mindedly, "Wait. What? No."
"You said 'yeah', Dude..." Butcher told him, "That's permission."
"It is..." Chislett agreed.
Jack rolled his eyes, "Oh yeah." he said sarcastically, "Let's all go fuck Sam."
"They're just all jealous, you've got a hot wife" Pete said, suddenly appearing from the trunk.
"Holy shit!" Jack said, staring at him, "When did Shorty get in the car?!"
"He's been there..." Adam said, laughing slightly.
"Nobody told me that." Jack said, rolling his eyes.
"Well yeah," Chislett muttered, "We decided to surprise you."
"Why the... Fuck?" Jack asked, "Never mind..."
Pete laughed, "But seriously, Sam is sexy."
"Well yeah." Jack said, "Obviously."
"Is she good?" Carden asked.
Jack rolled his eyes "Why would I tell you?"
"So she isn't." Pete said, nodding.
"No she's great." Jack said, taking out his iPod.
"Like... Nasty great?" Butcher asked, turning around from the passenger's seat.
"Yeah sure.."
"What's she do?" Adam asked.
"A variety." Jack said, shooting him a glare.
"But... What does she let you get away with?" Adam persisted.
"Alright do you really want to know?" Jack asked.
"Yes." Carden said, "We all do."
"Everything. We do everything."
"You're so full of shit." Pete said, "Or she's a slut..."
"I swear to god, I'll punch you." Jack said, turning around quickly to face Pete.
"Well she is..." Carden said.
"Putting iPod on now." Jack said laughing slightly, turning it on and hitting 'shuffle'.
They all remained silent for a few minutes before Pete finally pulled out Jack's earbuds and randomly screamed into his ear.
The flight to Pomona proved actually productive for Jack who began to write lyrics for their next album, jotting down his ideas for the guitar and bass parts. He spent the entire four hours leaning over his spiral, his long hair tucked behind his ears to avoid distraction. On occasion he would rip a sheet of paper out of the notebook then crumple it into a ball. He did his best to ignore the bantering of his bandmates and Pete, who had apperantly missed his flight the night before.
Fortunately, English had been the one class that Jack had not completely failed and he found little difficulty in stringing together phrases to form a song. He did not doubt his ability, he had always been fairly good at writing, he just never pushed himself to put much effort into it when effort was needed. Had he actually tried to express himself through his writing while he was younger, Jack had realized while writing the songs in Almost Here, he would have found it less difficult to vent and therefore would have saved himself much of the trouble he had endured after his father's death.
The rest of the guys seemed not to notice Jack's unbreakable focus, they spent the entire flight in conversation. It wasn't until they began to descend that Mike Carden took the spiral and began to flip through it, nearly twenty pages were filled up with lyrics and tablature. He nodded approvingly as he skimmed the lines, handing it to Jack as they stood up to get off of the plane.
Pomona was different from Barrington, that much was pretty obvious, and as Jack stepped out into the summer heat he knew that he had made the right choice in touring. The buses were waiting for them outside the airport, prepared to take them to the Pomona Fairplex, and some people had gathered around. The majority of them, apperantly, were interested in Pete, who seemed pretty intent on ignoring them and made his way towards Fall Out Boy's bus.
The whole band ignored them, walking away and distributing their belongings in the bus. After so much travel, and waking up so early, none of them were quite up for talking to their fans, let alone perform a concert at three p.m., four hours from then. Jack and Adam sucked it up, stepping out of the tour bus.
They were approached by a female reporter, dressed in a short denim skirt and a white tank top. Her long blonde hair was pulled back in a loose side ponytail. "Hello." she said, shaking hands with them, "I'm Christy Watson. Could I get an interview with you for Bullz Eye?"
"Yeah..." Adam said, "Sure."
"Definately," Jack added, taking off his sunglasses.
After a moment of small talk, the camera man finally gave Christy the okay to begin filming.
"Hey, this is Christy Watson with William Beckett and Adam T. Siska of The Academy Is... How are you guys?" Christy asked, holding the microphone over to them.
"We're... Uhh..." Jack started.
"Great." Adam finished for him.
"Yeah." Jack said, "We're all a little tired from the plane ride but we're... Umm... We're excited to be here."
"Where did you fly from?" Christy asked.
"Chicago." Adam said, smiling randomly. "We've been up since like four. Like Jack said we're all a bit tired."
Christy gave a nod,"Yeah, you must be. You didn't fly down yesterday?"
"Nah." Jack said, "I uhh... I guess we're not the smartest."
"Definately not the smartest." Adam agreed.
"I'm sure that's not true." Christy said, giving a big smile, "And I mean you guys look great. How do you keep yourselves so skinny?"
"I knew you were going to ask that," Adam said, "We're always asked."
"Well the answer to this age-old question is believe it or not quite simple." Jack said before Adam could answer for himself, "To begin with, we only dine during the days between the bimonthly c-crescent moons. Except of course, during the month of umm... Of October, in which we bleed ourselves dry of the witching season’s demons. But we all know these methods, as made umm... Famous by the lovely Lindsay Lohan. The key to our flawless form however, is in our s-sleeping method. Every night, we sleep hanging up... Upside down alongside six fruit bats... I have four on my right side and uh.. two on my left side. Left is my dominant hand, so I don’t need as much energy on that side from the guardians of the... of the night. Just follow those easy steps, add a well-balanced diet and exercise, and you too, can have a bod like... Like us."
Adam laughed, "Jack's pretty much explained it. Except I'm the one that sleeps with the bats, he sleeps next to Sam."
"Eh. Uhh... What's the difference?" Jack asked, laughing afterwards, "No. Just kidding."
Christy laughed too, "Is Sam your girlfriend?"
"Sam's my... My wife." Jack said.
"So you're married?" Christy asked.
"Yeah, I'm married." Jack said, nodding.
"A daughter too." Adam added.
"A daughter?" Christy asked, "That's great. You look so young though. How old are you?"
"I'm twenty." Jack said, "I got married young... When I was... I was... Uhh... eighteen and had Amy a year ago."
"He's got two more on the way too." Adam said.
Jack smiled, "Yeah... But that's really not important right now."
"Hey, I'm interested." Christy told him, "So you left a family at home to tour this summer?"
"Sounds awful when you put it like that." Adam said.
"Yeah." Jack laughed, "It does... It was a hard decision but I'm excited to be touring with Cobra Starship and Fall Out Boy, I know them all very well. And we, meaning our band, get to play music in front of a- a lot of people – our fans and people who haven’t seen or heard us before. It’s a big opportunity to show them what we’re all about. It’s a special thing, seeing the effect y-you have on umm... on young people. Music was so important to me when I was young – I’m not old, I’m 20, like I said. Pete, Wentz, is a grandpa compared to me… I love Pete though… he’s my boy"
Adam nodded, "Yeah, it's gonna be a shit load of fun. It's great that we've gotten to be able to be in Warped so soon. Like Jack said it's a great opportunity for us to gather new fans and meet a lot of them. It sucks that we've got to be away for so long though."
"What about you?" Christy asked Adam, "Do you gave a girlfriend?"
"There's this one girl I've seen a few times..." He replied, "Her name's Kaia, we aren't really serious though."
"He's got a few other girls too..." Jack said.
"Well... Yeah... We aren't really dating even..."
Christy laughed again, "So you're saying you don't have a girlfriend then?"
"Yeah..." Adam said, "There's really not enough time with me with the band and stuff... Jack's good at balancing his priorities, I'm not."
"I've learned over time." Jack said.
"Well that's good," Christy told Jack, "Well I'm going to have to let you boys go since I know you'll want to rest a little before your concert. Anything you'd like to say to your fans?"
"Uhh..." Jack said, "I dunno."
"No advice or anything?"
"Well... Be yourself." Adam said.
"Always be yourself." Jack added.
"Fuck the fake bitches." Adam continued.
"Thank you guys." Christy laughed, "I'll see you at the concert then."
"Thanks." Jack said, giving her a hug after Siska did.
They walked towards the bus again, feeling even more tired suddenly. Jack took out his cellphone, realizing that it would be a good idea to turn it on if Sam decided to call. He realized during the interview that he was missing her a lot already. He got into the bus and collapsed onto his bunk, staring at the wall.
He sat up, scanning the dark floor for his boxers. He eventually gave up, standing and walking to his dresser to get another pair. Most of his clothing had been packed away already so he grabbed a pair of jeans and a green t-shirt.
