"Natalie Beckett," Leah said in a sing song voice as she walked into Natalie's bedroom room, "Time to get up, Darling."
"Get out, Mom..." Natalie muttered into her nest of white pillows.
"C'mon, Sweetie..." Leah told her, sitting down on the side of the bed, "It's almost noon."
"Yeah," Natalie said, rolling over onto her back and wiping her tangled mess of brown hair out of her eyes, "And it's a Saturday."
"All the more reason not to waste it..." Leah told her, standing up again and pulling the covers off of her.
"You're acting like my boyfriend..." Natalie groaned as she curled herself into a ball. After a few seconds she realized that Jake was not her boyfriend, Kevin was. She sighed lightly, suddenly immersing herself into thought. She hadn't been able to stop thinking of Jake for the past three weeks. She had left so suddenly and hadn't even thought to get his number. Now she wished she had done so. Although she hated to admit it, she was beginning to miss him.
"Speaking of your boyfriend, his plane landed an hour ago... He called for you." Leah told her, grabbing a pillow and hitting Natalie over the head with it.
Natalie sat up and muttered, "Great..."
"Are you feeling alright?"
"I'm fine, Mom..."
"Are you on your period? You seem so tired lately..." Leah muttered, sitting down again.
"I am tired... But no... I had my period last we-" she stopped, she had missed her period last week.
"What?"
"Nothing..." Natalie said, standing up and pulling her shorts down slightly, "I'm fine..."
Leah gave a slight nod and walked out of the room saying, "Don't you fucking dare go back to bed... I want you downstairs in five minutes..."
"Yeah yeah yeah..." Natalie muttered as she hurried into her bathroom. She closed the door, fumbling through her drawers until she found the pink cardboard box. She opened it, grabbing a test and ripping it open. She had bought the tests when she first started dating Kevin and his condom had broken. The last test had come up negative, hopefully this time would be the same.
She stood still for a couple minutes afterward, staring at the pink plus sign that had appeared. After a while she set it down on the counter and began to brush her teeth, shoving the entire idea from her mind. She was brushing her hair back into a ponytail when she heard the doorbell ring. A moment later she heard her mom yell, "Natalie!"
"Crap..." Natalie muttered as she ran out of the room and down the stairs. "Kevvy!" she said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster. She walked quickly past her mom and closed the door, wrapping her arms around Kevin's neck and kissing him on the cheek.
"We're not gonna go inside?" Kevin asked.
Natalie shook her head slightly, "My mom's annoying the shit out of me..."
"C'mon... I just came all the way from New York..." Kevin told her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Good for you..." Natalie said, managing a smile.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Natalie said quickly.
"Did Jack tell you?"
"Tell me what?" Natalie asked, cocking an eyebrow.
"Nothing..." Kevin said, laughing slightly.
Natalie folded her arms and pouted. After a moment Kevin shrugged and reached into his pocket, pulling out a ring. "I was going to ask you tonight at dinner but-"
"Kevin..." Natalie said, "That's a ring."
"I know it is...."
"An engagement ring..." Natalie said quietly.
"Yes it is... I want to marry you, Natalie. I love you. I've got it all planned out. You can move in with me after you graduate... And you can go to college in the city..."
"I can't..." Natalie said, wiping a tear from her eye.
"Why not? You said weeks ago that you'd be willing to-"
"Kevin, I'm pregnant..." Natalie interrupted.
"You're... What?" Kevin asked.
"Pregnant...." Natalie repeated, "With a baby..."
"My baby?"
"No..." Natalie admitted, biting her lip and looking up at him, "No it's not."
"Then whose-"
"Kevin I was stupid!" Natalie said loudly, "I fucked up... He was an asshole and I was just... Stupid..."
"Yeah," Kevin said, throwing the ring into the lawn, "Yeah you were."
Natalie gulped as he walked away, finally allowing herself to cry. She walked back inside and grabbed her keys, running into the garage and getting into her new silver Honda Accord. She drove to Jake's aparment building, immediately running inside and knocking on his door. As it opened, she walked straight in, saying in between her tears, "Fucking... Proposed... No... Now he's gone... You fucking bastard!" She collapsed onto the couch, burrying her face into a pillow and continuing to sob.
